  NEWS AND URGENT UPDATES...

9/6/09 Special Double A sided single release by The Deaf Animal Orchestra and Shane Barry And The Distractions.....

TUT TUT! Our editors been at it again! This time he's been spreading the word on our 2006/07 Originality Award Winners new shared single release by writing the following to various 'other' music sites and magazines first..tut tut tut!

Shane Barry and The Distractions/ Deaf Animal Orchestra AA single release

« on: Today at 01:37:58 AM »

Two of Waterfords best Indie bands have come together to release a double A sided single release worth it's weight in Gold. The Deaf Animal Orchestra and Shane Barry And The Distractions may seem very different in musical style and image ...but the new double A release has found a perfect pairing in the songs called 'No Wit Can Save Me Now' and 'A Man Called Gerald'.

The Deaf Animals 'No Wit Can Save Me Now' is yet another in a long line of lyrical classics that weave through a miriad of softly sung and almost spoken words - like a Shakespearean soliliquay of love for the 21st century ..and with all their other previous ep and single releases being heavily laced with intense drama, thrills and the occaisional deadly dose of venom, songs by these 'animals' often play out with more drama than Macbeth,Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet combined.

Musicaly, they are a band that critics would find hard to pin a genre to and as 'No Wit' proves ,they can expertly glide in and out of any genre they so choose at the drop of a hat. Stormy and classic indie, metal, pop and rock is sailed through at ease by these expert musical mariners and 'No Wit' ticks off yet another genre by easing it's way through an almost 50's Everly Brothers style and yet somehow utterly surpasses it completely . Now I hate most slushy 50's styled music with a passion and personaly, always found the 50's pop scene to be fake and contrived - but the combination of searching lyrics to expose the desires and weaknesses of a certain four letter word that most struggle over with a beautifull and surprisingly gentle melody must surely ammount to a 'must have' classic worthy of a number one anywhere in it's own right.

So add Shane Barry and The Distractions 'A Man Called Gerald' into the equasion and you're now looking at a 'double number one'.

The Distractions and Shane are another band of very highly skilled musicians and deliver an incredibly tight sound which could almost be compared to Dexy's Midnight Runners amid a head on collision with Ian Dury's 'Blockheads', The Commitments (-without the in-fighting and the girls-)and The Blues Brother's tailor and band. An already upbeat tune spliced through with an 'East-end style on the ole Joanna', is punched up even higher through the roof by some excellent, intricate, rythum and lead guitar, only to be sent even further on into orbit above the Diese with some rocket powered bursts of what must be the nations tightest brass section.

Barry's dualisticly serious yet (on the video at least-)somehow almost comic delivery style gives the track that little tweak of curious mirth to seep into the pores and tickle the hearts 'curious for more strings' with ease...and even the slightest of searches throughout their MySpace will, just as with the Deaf Animals', reveal an enormous wealth of musical riches that defy traditional 'genre' and 'image' placement by transcending all the cliches through an incredibly gifted catologue of sound.

The special Vinyl release only for this double A collaboration is June 12th 09...so if you don't have a record player with stereo compatable stylus heads anymore then this single will be a perfect excuse to go out and buy one and see the difference it makes. Classic cover photography by Al Higgins adorns the new single released through Irelands Primate Records with more reasons to buy it found through the sound and video samples of both bands MySpace pages....

Irish Indie Music Update: 23 Feb 2009, 23:22

Stop this very special 'road' from closing and instead please help to turn it into a motorway!!!!

The Irish Indie and underground music scene is probably the most creative and vibrant in the entire world and for the last eleven years the main source of access that the rest of the world had to tap into that source 'physically' has been ROAD RECORDS in Dublin. It's a pricy buisness to run an independant music store in Ireland these days and there have even been times when Road's owners Julie and Dave have gone out of pocket just to support new releases by struggling artists. While the worlds banks are busy turning the ordinary man over in the street and helping to flush their futures away in a cess pit of monitary greed it seems that the resulting lack of cash to spend in the everyday pocket is also sucking Road Records down the pan with it...But Road is a vital link in Irelands musical chain and many of the nations fans and bands just dont think this particular chain should be flushed. They are now putting on a special concert to help save Dave and Julie's treasured link and put a little back into their pockets as a special thankyou for supporting Irelands finest Independants for so long - and so often out of their own pockets and without complaint!

Some treasures should just be saved...there is more on the special gig in Dublins Andrews Lane on 14th March featuring the likes of Jape, The Frames' Colm MacConIomaire and many more at Dave and Julies Myspace at....http://www.myspace.com/roadrecords (direct link now under the Glen Hansard/Marketa Irglova Oscar award pic -below right)

  ROAD UPDATE 24/3/09

Due to the amazing response from musicians and fans alike Road records has had a reprieve from the 'greed' reaper and will continue to trade. Hoooray!!! But please don't forget them and do make sure you check them out when searching for some of the best new indie Irish artists on cd and/or vynyl.

...And yes, we do know that Colm couldn't make the gig due to an eye injury that day.

  * That curious Hideout Records competition previously advertised at the Dublin music show has now ended..We had tipped Simon Delaney's entry as the most worthwhile entrant, though on closer examination of the studio and label concerned it seems that the Hideout competition may have been better suited to entries looking for a musical career on Craggy Island as opposed to up and coming bands of the future looking for a spotlight among the cutting edge of Irelands new wave of prolific gifted artists. Simon's band called THE COLD 100 is still one to look out for for new recordings in the coming months and can be found at the link button below and to the right. Live shows in the Dublin area have all been highly recomended too! Another Indie band with a big bright future we think....
